Introducing Yourself In Silozi
LEARN SILOZI LANGUAGE
BY KALALUKA NASILELE
If you are planning to visit Barotseland, you are at the right page that will teach you how to express yourself in Silozi. You are better off learning Silozi language so you will enjoy yourself in Barotseland. You will as well find it easy to express yourself in other countries such as Botswana, Namibia, South Africa, Lesotho and even some parts of Angola and Congo D.R
In the morning you say “Muzuhile cwani?” which means “Good morning?” as a reference to an elder person while “Uzuhile cwani?” is in reference to a young person, your age mate or informal in short. Most Silozi formal words normally start with M.
In response, you say “Hande”, which literally mean “Fine” in English. You can further say “Hande, “Hande, wena ucwani?
To ask where one is from you say “ Uzwa kai, Usimuluha kai? and so on, in response you will say “ Ni simuluha kwa…… for example (ka mutala) “Nisimuluha kwa Sisheke” equals “I’m from Sisheke.
NOTE: It’s wrong to combine Silozi words with other words from other languages especially those who do not originate together with Silozi, this is because a native Silozi speaker will not be able to understand you. Any Silozi dialect may be mixed with Silozi, as you may know that Silozi is a combination of 38 dialects of Barotseland, and other similar southern African language such as Setswana, Sesotho, Sepedi and so on.
Perhaps, you may think that asking for help is that difficult in Silozi, wow it is that simple like in any other language. For instance, (ka mutala), when you say “Nikupa tuso shangwe”? When you express this sentence, you are politely saying “Am asking for help please?” a person will respond as “Nikamitusa nyi?
